Whernside

Approximately 8.4 miles taking up to 4 hours depending on ability. Whernside is the highest of the three famous Yorkshire Three Peaks standing at 736m, with a total ascent of 525m. Starting out at one of the many roadside laybys at the junction of the B6255 and the B6479, with fantastic views of the Ribblehead Viaduct.

Just a short 20 minute drive away from Quarry Cottage.

The walk is a circular starting the Ribblehead Viaduct following the Three Peaks path for most of the route, the walk begins as a gentle uphill stroll, eventually becoming steeper as the peak nears. There are well maintained paths for almost the whole walk making underfoot more comfortable.

Once at the peak the views over the Lakeland Fells and the Yorkshire Dales are spectacular and well worth the effort.

Descending can be tricky as the path drops quite sharply in places eventually coming back out under the Ribblehead Viaduct.
